We interview Rafa Castillo (@azicuetano), developer of Baba’s Palace and winner of CPCRetroDev 2017 along with John McKlain. Baba’s Palace was a game that surprised us all and the only puzzle game that has won the CPCRetroDev to date. Rafa Castillo, moreover, had not published any videogame for #Amstrad CPC before. The game not only won the contest, it also prompted Rafa Castillo to join forces with 4MHz, who together would produce Operation Alexandra the following year, winning the CPCRetroDev again.
Rafa will tell us how he decided to start Baba’s Palace, his 1 year long journey of learning, improving and developing technology to end up with this great winning videogame. As always, we will delve into the technical details and see how the different parts of the game are implemented. We will also see how Rafa did it to introduce no less than 100 levels into the game. Not only will we look at the technical side of including the 100 levels, but also the design side of them, both for the difficulty and progression of the game and to be able to do it all in a finite amount of time. Lots of very interesting #GameDev #GameDesign and #Programming topics that you can’t miss.
